One of Benalmádena's most important historical landmarks, Santo Domingo de Guzmán Church has stood at the heart of Benalmádena Pueblo since the 17th century. Built after the Christian Reconquest of southern Spain, the church has served as the spiritual centre of the village for centuries and remains one of its most recognisable buildings.
Perched on one of the highest points in the Pueblo, the church enjoys breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the Mediterranean Sea, the coastline and, on clear days, even towards North Africa. Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción
Parish Church, Arroyo de la Miel
Located in the heart of Arroyo de la Miel, the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción is the principal parish church serving the modern centre of Benalmádena. Although much newer than the historic church in the Pueblo, it plays an equally important role in the daily life of the local community.
Its distinctive modern architecture combines clean contemporary lines with traditional religious symbolism, creating a welcoming and peaceful space for worship. The spacious interior regularly hosts religious services, concerts and community events throughout the year.
The church is especially significant during Semana Santa, when it becomes the starting point for many of Arroyo de la Miel's Easter processions. These colourful celebrations feature beautifully decorated religious floats carried through the streets, accompanied by traditional music and local brotherhoods.
Throughout the year, the church also hosts baptisms, weddings and important religious celebrations, making it a central part of community life.

Stupa of Enlightenment
Europe's Largest Buddhist Stupa
Standing proudly above Benalmádena Pueblo, the Stupa of Enlightenment is one of the municipality's most striking landmarks and an internationally recognised symbol of peace, harmony and understanding.
Completed in 2003, it is the largest Buddhist stupa in Europe, standing 33 metres high. Built under the guidance of the respected Buddhist teacher Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche, the monument represents peace, compassion and wisdom, welcoming visitors of every faith and background.
Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and quiet walkways, the stupa offers a peaceful retreat from the busier tourist areas below. Many visitors come simply to admire its elegant architecture, while others enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views across Benalmádena, the Mediterranean coastline and the mountains beyond.
Inside the monument is a meditation hall and exhibition area, while nearby the Buddhist Centre offers regular meditation sessions, talks and cultural events for those wishing to learn more about Tibetan Buddhism.

Ermita de la Virgen de la Cruz
Chapel of the Virgin of the Cross – Patron Saint of Benalmádena
Perched on the hills overlooking Benalmádena Pueblo, the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cruz is a peaceful whitewashed chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Cross, the patron saint of Benalmádena. Although modest in size, it holds great importance in the town's religious and cultural heritage.
The chapel stands close to the site where, according to local tradition, an image of the Virgin was discovered centuries ago. This event led to the Virgin of the Cross becoming the town's patron saint, and today she remains at the heart of Benalmádena's most important annual religious celebrations.
Each August, the chapel becomes a focal point during the Fiestas Patronales, when the image of the Virgin is carried in procession through the streets by local residents. The celebrations combine religious devotion with music, dancing, fireworks and traditional Andalusian festivities, attracting both locals and visitors.
Even outside the festival period, the chapel offers a tranquil place for quiet reflection and rewards visitors with beautiful views across Benalmádena Pueblo and the Mediterranean coastline.

A small historical note
One point worth mentioning is that the chapel itself is not an ancient historic church. Its significance comes from its association with the legend of the discovery of the Virgin of the Cross and its continuing role in Benalmádena's religious life, rather than from the age of the building itself. I think that's actually more interesting for visitors because it explains why the chapel is so important to local people, not just what it looks like.
Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa de San Nicolás
Russian Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas
One of the most distinctive religious buildings on the Costa del Sol, the Russian Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas is instantly recognisable by its magnificent golden onion domes and traditional Russian architecture. Consecrated in 2007, it was built to serve the growing Orthodox Christian community living in and visiting southern Spain.
The church was inaugurated in the presence of representatives from both the Russian Orthodox Church and the Spanish authorities, symbolising the close cultural links that have developed between the region and its international residents. Its elegant white exterior, richly decorated domes and beautifully landscaped grounds make it one of Benalmádena's most photographed religious landmarks.
Inside, visitors will discover a peaceful sanctuary featuring colourful icons, intricate religious artwork and traditional Orthodox design. While services are held regularly for the Orthodox community, respectful visitors are welcome to admire both the architecture and the tranquil atmosphere.
Although relatively modern, the church has become an important symbol of Benalmádena's multicultural character and demonstrates how the town has welcomed people from many different nations and faiths.

Mezquita de Benalmádena
Benalmádena Mosque
The Benalmádena Mosque serves the local Muslim community and reflects the rich cultural diversity that has become part of modern Benalmádena. Combining elegant Islamic architectural features with a peaceful setting, the mosque provides a place of worship, education and community gathering.
Its design incorporates traditional elements of Islamic architecture, including a graceful minaret, horseshoe arches and decorative geometric patterns, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding Mediterranean landscape. The mosque stands as a reminder of Andalucía's long and fascinating Islamic heritage, which shaped much of southern Spain for almost 800 years.
Although primarily a place of worship, the mosque is also an important cultural landmark, highlighting the diversity of faiths that coexist within Benalmádena today. Visitors are welcome to admire the building from the outside, and those wishing to enter should do so respectfully, observing appropriate dress and visiting arrangements.
